Entry: There's a Drought, a Water Shortage, and Fires Saturday, July 16, 2005

A grass fire just flashed within minutes on the Wanstead Flats this morning.   There's a drought in Southern England.   There's a water shortage in Southern England.   There's a new Desalination Plant in Beckton.

Don't waste water.   Time to control the Demand for Water, just like in all the ads on the radio.   The supply is limited, and even an idiot economist or a daydreaming scientist can't argue that Desalination Plants are the solution.

Low rainfall causes the fire risk, but can't be totally blamed for the water shortage. Why do we flush top quality drinking water down the toilet, water gardens and wash cars with it when ordinary river water would be just as good? The answer of course, is that we only the one network of water pipes at present, and a very leaky one it is too.
I didn't even know that desalination was being considered, but I'd have thought it would have to be solar powered to be at all viable.

Oh dear :-( It was tinder dry the last time I was there a couple of weeks ago. Desalination plants seem like a total waste of energy but no matter how much water people saved the flats would still be a fire risk in this weather. I'm not sure I understand the connection. I might be being dim of course.
